On Saturday 12 July 2008, the community of Fort Scott, Kansas, USA completed the longest line of coins measuring 64.88 km (40.32 miles) and consisting of 3,406,234 US 1 cent coins.  The event took place in the Fort Scott Middle School parking lot starting on the evening of Tuesday 8th and running through 3 a.m. Saturday morning.  The previous record was 55.63 km (34.57 miles) set in Malaysia in 1995.  The Guinness World Record attempt was organised by Youth Activities Team and is part of a "Pennies for the Park" fundraiser that YAT has conducted in an effort to raise money for improvements at Ellis Park in Fort Scott.

Hundreds of area residents participated in laying the pennies from early morning till late at night.  YAT Co-convener Diana Mitchell attributed the achievement to the community of Fort Scott.  ‘I’m so proud of this entire town.  This was not just YAT’s win.  It was an entire town.  What a great day to be living in Fort Scott,’ she said.

Fort Scott should be proud of its community as they had set another record on the previous day by laying one mile of pennies in 2 hours 23 minutes and 1 second. They beat the previous record by just 74 seconds.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Kaoru Ishikawa announced two new world records and presented certificates to the YAT team.  Ishikawa praised the community spirit of Fort Scott, ‘I have seen many exciting events since I joined GWR, but joining together of a community for one common goal like this was truly inspirational.’
